The university was established in 1893, on February 24, by an act of Congress, in the District of Columbia, with the help of George Washington, who wrote a letter in which he expressed his desire of founding a `national university` in the capital of the nation.
AU is known today as being a private research university in Washington, DC, having a total enrollment of more than 11 000 students, and 1,500 freshmen each year, offering various academic programs and degrees, through six colleges and schools, including the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the School of Communication (SOC), School of Public Affairs (SPA) and Washington College of Law (WCL).
The original design of the campus was conceived by Frederick Law Olmsted, being significantly modified in time due to financial constraints, occupying today over 80 acres, being situated adjacent to Ward Circle, at the intersection of Massachusetts and Nebraska Avenues.
Among the most important buildings on campus we find the University (Bender) Library, the Mary Graydon Center, the Katzen Arts Center and the School of International Service. There are more than 200 recognized student organizations on campus, including social, political and academic groups, such as the Kennedy Political Union which is part of the Student Government.
The AU Athletics programs include sports such as soccer, basketball, cross-country, volleyball, lacrosse and swimming, having the Reeves Field, which is home of the university's soccer team, considered to be one of the most important soccer fields in the capital.
AU has been highly ranked by the Princeton Review, recognizing it as the first `Most Politically Active Campus in the United States` for 2 times in the past 3 years, as well as by The Advocate, placing the university among the `top 20 schools for LGBT students`.
